Mahaulepu Beach in Kauai Hawaii

There are so many beaches and so many different types of beaches…and waterfalls…and spectacular views here on Kauai that it can be difficult to decide which ones to visit. Fortunately we can help you resolve this dilemma. And with many of Kauai’s attractions, selecting a destination is only half the challenge—after all, on an island where paved roads can only take you to a tiny percentage of what there is to see, you still need to figure out how to get there! We can help you with that too.

We specialize in helping you make the most of your time on Kauai, and that means understanding exactly what you want to get out of your visit so we can guide you accordingly. No two visits to Kauai are alike, and we want yours to be the trip of a lifetime. Nothing is as rewarding to us as hearing one of our guests say, “Wow, thank you so much for the tip! We never would have found that on our own!”

So whether you want a lot of guidance or prefer to explore the island on your own, we can help you find exactly the Kauai you came here to discover.

Breakfast Served Daily Gets Your Day Started Right

“We have never looked forward to breakfast as much as we do here!”
~H.L., Zurich, Switzerland

Guests eating breakfast on the back lanai of Kauai Beach Inn, Poipu Bed and BreakfastOne of the things that makes staying at the Kauai Beach Inn such an outstanding value is the full tropical breakfasts our guests enjoy each morning.

“Best coffee I’ve ever had!”

We start with fresh-ground, locally grown, French press-brewed coffee (or you may choose from a variety of black, green, or herbal teas) and tropical fruit juice.

“It looks too good to eat!”

No matter how many times we see it, we still get a big kick out of how many of our guests insist on photographing their breakfast before eating it. Of course, we can’t blame them—we do take a lot of pride in our presentation and preparation.

The first course usually consists of fresh local fruits (some are grown right here on the property), locally made granola, and other tropical treats prepared just for you. The second course is cooked to order and often includes fresh-baked breads, Patti’s famous French toast or eggs, blueberry pancakes (we also gladly serve vegan meals upon request), and sometimes even Skip’s Lyonnaise potatoes (this is a special treat, but don’t be shy…you will find us very accommodating to your requests).

We serve a lot of food (but don’t worry—you don’t have to eat it all). Many of our guests tell us that the breakfast is so filling that they don’t feel the need to eat lunch, which can come in handy if you’re planning a hike or other extended adventure. And of course, when you factor in the cost of eating out, this is just one more reason that staying at the Kauai Beach Inn is one of Kauai’s best values!

Breakfast is normally served starting at 8:00 am. For guests who have early-morning adventures planned, we can provide a convenient breakfast-to-go or other specialized accommodations based on your needs.

We also offer a variety of locations and settings in which to enjoy your breakfast. Inside, outside, alone or with other guests…it’s really up to you. At the Kauai Beach Inn, our goal is to provide you with the best experience possible. So whatever your style, you’ll find us eager to comply.

The Front Lanai…a favorite spot to relax

Kauai Beach Inn Front Lanai & Main Entrance

There are many things to enjoy here at the Kauai Beach Inn, but one of the most noteworthy features are the lanais. To begin with, a definition is probably in order. It seems there’s a bit of controversy and misunderstanding on the mainland and in other parts of the world as to what exactly a lanai is.

The Back Lanai at the Kauai Beach InnHere in Hawaii, where the temperatures year round at sea level generally range from 75 – 85° F (23 – 30° C) and the trade winds keep everything nice and comfortable, we really don’t need walls, let alone air conditioners. Because of this, lanais (a Hawaiian word meaning “porch” or “veranda,” but typically used to describe “a veranda or roofed patio often furnished and used as a living room”) are very popular here.

So popular, in fact, that here at the Kauai Beach Inn we have 3 of them. This may take a bit of getting used to for those of you not familiar with Hawaii, but basically our lanais are extensions of our guest rooms where our guests can relax in comfort and do many of the things they would normally do inside.

Bougainvillea Suite Lanai at the Kauai Beach Inn

The lanai attached to the Bougainvillea Suite is popular for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just enjoying the tropical breezes.

Why Kauai? Waimea Canyon & the NaPali Coast Just for Starters

Waimea Canyon Ridge - Photo by Ray Gordon

Did you know that in a recent Travel + Leisure Magazine reader survey, Kauai was named the second best island in the world? (The only island ahead of Kauai was Galápagos, and you can’t really live or stay there – in fact, it “can be visited only via boat in the company of a national park guide,” according to Travel + Leisure Magazine.)

There are many reasons for the Garden Island’s popularity, not the least of which are Waimea Canyon and the NaPali Coast.

Waimea Canyon: Often called “the Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” Kauai’s Waimea Canyon is 10 miles long, 1 mile wide, and over 3,500 feet deep. Unlike many of Kauai’s stunning landscapes, Waimea Canyon is very easy to access—in fact, it’s one of very few such places on Kauai that can be seen via a paved road. Of course, there are many miles of hiking trails available for those who wish to experience the canyon on a more personal basis.

NaPali Coast Kauai Panorama

Kauai's NaPali Coast as seen from the ocean

NaPali Coast: Not quite so easy to view as Waimea Canyon, but equally spectacular, is Kauai’s NaPali Coast. There are many ways to experience the NaPali Coast, but none involve an automobile, since the highway basically begins and ends here. For the truly adventurous (and experienced), a 16 mile kayak trip can be accomplished in anywhere from 1 to 3 days. However, in addition to incredible stamina, this requires some planning.

Mostly inaccessible by water during the winter months, timing is everything. As one tour operator likes to describe their 1-day kayak tour, “this will either be the best day or the worst day of your entire vacation.” We’ve had guests tell us that they were in tears for the entire landing at Polihale beach. All that said, Fodors.com points out that “In its second year and second issue, National Geographic Adventure ranked kayaking Napali Coast second on its list of America’s Best 100 Adventures, right behind rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.”

If you plan to undertake a 2 or 3 day trip, camping permits will be required, and these often must be reserved up to 6 months ahead of time. So if you do plan to kayak the NaPali Coast, it’s best to know what you’re getting yourself into, and start planning well in advance.

Of course there are other ways to see the NaPali Coast that don’t require anywhere near the planning or athleticism that kayaking do. Helicopter tours offer one of the best ways to see all of Kauai, including places that are all but inaccessible any other way. Hiking the famous 11-mile Kalalau Trail is an up-close and personal way to get to know this breathtaking landscape, but this too requires camping and the associated permits. Finally, many boat tours are offered, usually lasting around 4 hours, weather permitting.

Maha’ulepu and Kauai’s Other Beaches

Maha’ulepu is just one of many beaches visitors to Kauai have to choose from. Each is unique and has its own special qualities. Some are remote and secluded while others are ideal for people-watching. Some have lifeguards and are bustling with activity, and feature nearby places to grab something to eat or drink. Some are ideal for snorkeling, others for sunbathing, and still others for surfing or body boarding.

The Inn

The great room at the Kauai Beach Inn is the perfect spot to read or just hang out

The great room at the Kauai Beach Inn is the perfect spot to read or just hang out and make new friends.

The Kauai Beach Inn – Poipu Bed and Breakfast offers a very unique and laid-back way to experience Hawaii’s Garden Island. Our authentic historic plantation home, situated on 1/2 acre filled with tropical fruit trees and other exotic plants, is the ideal home base from which to explore the many wonders of Kauai.

We offer a variety of accommodations so you can select just the right type for your style. Pamper yourself in a romantic suite with a jetted tub, large sitting area, and soothing lanai, or enjoy the coziness of a more intimate room. Regardless of what you choose, you will have access to plenty of space to stretch out, a flat screen TV with cable and Netflix, and free WiFi throughout the property.

Many of Kauai’s best beaches, dining, and other attractions are an easy walk or short drive from our property. Our central location on Kauai’s sunny south shore means that not only do we experience the best weather on the island year-round, but our guests have easy access to the best of Kauai as well. Waimea Canyon, the NaPali Coast, Kilauea Lighthouse, National Tropical Botanical Gardens, incredible scuba diving, snorkeling, golf, surfing, biking, hiking, and much, much more are all within easy reach.

Local wild rooster eating a mango at the Kauai Beach Inn

A brief note about Kauai’s Roosters: Anyone who knows Kauai knows that wild chickens and roosters can be found on every part of the island. As you can see from this photo, they seem to love our mangoes almost as much as our guests do. And yes, they can be annoying on occasion, apparently having no sense of timing whatsoever. Fortunately, we have found that a good pair of earplugs goes a long way toward drowning out the nighttime crowing that can sometimes occur. We make these available to our guests at no charge. Noise-cancelling fans are also available at no charge upon request. It is believed that Kauai’s small or non-existent mongoose population (unlike the large populations found on the other Hawaiian Islands) is the reason for our abundance of chickens, originally introduced by Polynesian settlers over 1,000 years ago. Of course, our lack of mongoose is also the reason that Kauai is home to six species of endangered birds only found on Kauai, making Kauai a birder’s paradise. So despite the roosters’ lack of consideration, we’ll take the chickens over the mongoose.
